Update on Reporting Rabies Exposure (December 2008)
Recommended Rabies exposure process
- Have the patient fill out a CDRS Animal Bite report.
- Using the information on the bite report and your clinical evaluation, review the Rabies Algorithm to determine if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is appropriate.
- If the patient meets the criteria for PEP, notify the local health department.
- Business Hours Monday – Friday 8am-5pm call the Columbus Public Health Communicable Disease Nurse at 614-645-1474.
- After hours call 614-778-6762
- The local health department needs five critical pieces of information to evaluate for PEP
- The patient’s name and telephone number
- A situational description of the exposure
- The species of animal involved
- Whether or not the animal is available for quarantine/testing
- The location and time where the exposure occurred
- For administration of vaccine manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur, you will need a passcode from the local health department.
- If the case meets criteria for PEP, you will be given a pass code with which you can order the vaccine.
- If the case does not meet the criteria per ODH evaluation, then no code will be given.
- The pharmacist will order the vaccine using the Sanofi Pasteur form provided. There is a box on the form for the code given by the health department.
- For administration of vaccine manufactured by any other manufacturer (Novartis), no passcode is required at this time.
Forward the completed Animal Bite form to CDRS by fax 614-719-8890. Make sure to note on the form that the health department was consulted.
